It is the story of the hermit Saint Florentius (6th century), an Irish monk whose pilgrimage continues today. The pilgrims passed through the rock of Pfaffenlapp and Breitberg because the monk quickly attracted disciples to the Ringelberg. Saint Florentius was the 7th bishop of Strasbourg and founded a monastery in Niederhaslach but the collegiate church was established later on in the 11th century. In 810, the body of Saint Florentius was transferred there. The Saint Florentius chapel was erected in 1315 on the site of the former hermitage.Saint Florentius is a protector of cattle, very popular in the Middle Ages and could cure colics and other digestive diseases.
